When was the last time you sat in the back seat of a car with your children? For about three hours the other day I had that privilege and can honestly say I enjoyed almost every minute of it.
We have been out for over a month and there are many things I enjoy: learning about other cultures; talking to fellow travelers; and, spending most days outside in new places. However, what I treasure most is the un-distracted, unplugged time with my family. The other day I spent a good hour really listening — not just half listening while I cooked dinner — to Colin explain the finer details of Minecraft. Today we sat on the deck of a beautiful lake house and made up silly stories because there was nothing else to do, nowhere to be and no devices to watch.
It is bed time as I write this and we are all in the same room. Decker is fast asleep and as Colin begins to drift off and process the day’s events, he shares sleepy comments of “Oh Mom, remember when….” They are growing up too fast but I am thankful this year has allowed me to slow down and tune in to my boys.
